Just like your daily life practice, your makeup design is all about creating balance. Nothing should jump out, or take “the greater place of importance” on your face. Especially make sure your eye makeup is balanced with your lip makeup. Typically, whether or not you wear much of anything on a daily basis, the look will need to be more dramatic simply because of the colors you are wearing on the special day. With such bold shades and elaborate jewelry, the face needs to be complemented by those adornments, not overshadowed by them. So use these tips to create a plan now, so you can focus on other things like wedding favors, flowers, and music! Let’s begin with a base…
Foundation
I recommend using a light facial moisturizer about ten minutes before applying foundation. Choose a foundation that is the right shade for you, keeping in mind that you will be photographed all day long, and possibly be outside in the elements for long stretches. Shades with yellow or olive undertones tend to work well, while a pink undertone may wash you out slightly or make you look paler than normal. Dust on a translucent powder to set it, and add a warm toned bronzer if you want a little extra glow. Don’t forget all the little “forgotten spots” – the neck, chin, under and above the eyes to maintain a cohesive look that doesn’t look artificial.
Eyes
For a simple and elegant eye, choose shadows that complement your outfit, and perhaps a combination of a neutral tone and a deeper color such as plum or magenta that may be in the outfit. To make eyes pop, use a thin white eyeliner pencil first around eye rim, and finish off with black gel eyeliner. Gel eyeliner is great because it is smooth, and most are waterproof. Some brides prefer fake eyelashes for the big day, but a good mascara and eyelash curler can also work, depending on your level of comfort. And don’t forget to shape your brows before the big day!
Cheeks
Choose a powder blush in a shade that appeals to you and creates balance with the eyes and lips. The shade, again, may be one that is picked up in your garment. Powder blushes are preferable to cream based ones, which run or smear more easily in the heat, or in the height of an emotional moment.
Lips
Overall, you want to choose a lipstick that coordinates with the rest of your makeup and outfit. Stay away from colors that are too pale, and look instead to bright reds, bold oranges, pinks, etc. While these colors may not necessarily grace your everyday life, your wedding is the time to be bold. Finding a long-lasting lipstick will also be of importance because your day is going to be long, and touching up your lips is the last thing that you want on your mind. When you’re thanking your guests for their compliments on your unique wedding favors, your smile will be glowing and lovely.
Shaadi Mubarak!
